Tuscany Casentino Poppi |
|
It is not my intention to give you excessive details on the Casentino to spare you the expense of a guide. The Casentino is the name of the upper valley of the Arno river. The same one passing under the Ponte Vecchio bridge in Firenze. In Summer many of Firenze inhabitants gather in close-by Casentino to relax and escape the heat of their city. The secluded situation of the Casentino until quite recently has kept this part of Tuscany free of mass tourism. For an outsider many of the people of this valley seem to be popping out of the Middle ages . Secluded as it has been for centuries, it is no wonder. What is wonderful is that the population is still tourist friendly. Here you will meet with the politeness, education and charm of old-time Italy. It’s a land of handicrafts of wrought-iron, wood, worked sandstone and wool material. The landscape is great, breathtaking. |

Poppi is right in the middle of the Casentino. Driving down the Consuma Pass from Firenze you can see Poppi’s castle towering over the plains from far in the distance. Just before arriving in Poppi you will cross the Campaldino plain where the famous battle between Guelfes and Ghibelins of Firenze mentioned many times in the Divine Comedy took place in 1289. |
