Casa Luna in 1990 |
|
The Agriturismo Casa Luna is situated at 380metres above sea level, on the hillside in the middle of a little valley property of the farm which is close to the medieval borough of Poppi and its castle. The place is a real hideaway as just few locals know of its existence, although the main building was built at the beginning of the 18th. century. Its structure is typical of Tuscan farmhouses : roman tiles, stone walls, ceilings and roof out of terracotta and chestnut wood.
Wildlife here is present everywhere: porcupines, foxes, deer, pheasants, roe deer, wild boar roam freely in this zone. Close by in the National park you will find eagles and wolves as well. Some years ago a family of hawks did settle on our land. They built a big nest high up on a pine tree. So now, still present over our heads, the hawks old and young circle high up in the sky in search of fresh four legged delicacies.
Many trails and dirt roads lead you through woods and fields to the nearby places like Memmenano (a tiny village), Bibbiena, Soci ,Poppi or nowhere as you got lost….
In season you will find, if you are good at it, a wide range of mushrooms , even black truffles and the Casentino cep (Porcino), the most famous in Italy and probably the best you will eat in your life.
The water we drink here is spring water, there is no need for bottled mineral water. If you prefer wine, get it in Poppi by the litre, you will have good quality wine (Montepulciano) at a far better price and no litter.
Around the farm old mulberry trees are reminders of the times when China, Japan and Thailand where distant countries and silk precious enough for Europe to breed silk worms . The same goes with the Tuscany iris bulbs used as base essence for perfumes. Until recently they were still cultivated here too. Nowadays the bulk of the production has gone to Morocco. We now keep them just for beauty around the house. For a change we are now starting to produce bamboo shoots and bonsais as well as Japanese maples. We even know of someone producing Peonies (La Fattoria Giardini Toscani in Casentino).
We have permanent hosts living on the grounds: our old dog Kiki and our young cat Binka. A little farther dwells Emma the goat with or without lambs. Donkey and horses pop up just when there is grass. Pigs, ducks , hens, turkeys and geese come and go with our appetite.
For those who might be on the lookout for a house in Tuscany, here stands the logo and the link of our dear friend Adelmo who sold us back in the 90 the magnificent ruin you see on top of this page. If you have to trust a real estate agent in Tuscany, this is the guy ! |
